In 2007, SWMPC worked with Van Buren Public Transit to complete the Van Buren County (VBC) Coordinated Transit Plan to fulfill a new requirement initiated by federal legislation, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: a Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) of 2005. SAFETEA-LU requires the development of a public transit and human service transportation plan in order for public transit agencies to be eligible for certain grants from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) by fiscal year 2007.
In 2005, the SWMPC completed a transit study and implementation handbook for Van Buren Public Transit. This study looked at all aspects of the agency from ridership, to expenses, to vehicles, staff, and needs. The SWMPC assisted Van Buren County with an application to the Govenor's office (Centers for Regional Excellence grant program) to purchase and implement new technology for Van Buren Public Transit and human service providers.
